What is a Thyroid and Neck Ultrasound?
A thyroid and neck ultrasound is a safe, painless test that uses sound waves to create images of the thyroid
gland and the surrounding structures in your neck.
It helps your healthcare provider look at the size, shape, and appearance of the thyroid, as well as nearby
lymph nodes and other tissues.
Why is this test done?
Thyroid and neck ultrasound is used for:
Check for thyroid nodules (lumps in the thyroid)
Assess an enlarged thyroid (goitre)
Investigate abnormal thyroid blood tests
Examine lymph nodes in the neck
Monitor known thyroid conditions
How should I prepare?
No special preparation is required. You can eat, drink, and take your usual medications. Wear a comfortable
top with easy access to your neck area (e.g., a loose shirt or one with a low neckline).
What happens during the procedure?
You will lie on your back on an examination couch. A small amount of gel is applied to your neck to help the
ultrasound probe make good contact with the skin.
Sonographer moves the probe gently over your neck to obtain images of your thyroid and surrounding
structures. You may be asked to turn your head slightly or stay still for short periods. The ultrasound usually
takes 10–20 minutes.
Is the ultrasound painful or harmful?
The ultrasound is not painful. You may feel slight pressure from the probe. It is very safe — there is no
radiation involved.
After the scan
You can return to your normal activities immediately. The gel will be wiped off, though a small amount may
remain on your skin.
Are there any risks or side effects?
There are no known risks or side effects from an ultrasound.
It is one of the safest imaging tests available.
Results
• Your scan images will be reviewed and the results sent to your email, and if you wish to your referring
doctor.Safety
Ultrasound is widely recognised as a very safe procedure. It uses high-frequency sound waves rather than
ionising radiation, so there is no X-ray exposure. Most patients do not experience any side effects.
Occasionally, you may feel mild pressure or temporary discomfort from the probe during the examination,
but this usually settles quickly.
