Patient Information Leaflet: Breast Ultrasound
What is a Breast Ultrasound?
A breast ultrasound is a safe and painless test that uses sound waves to create images of the breast
tissue.
It helps your clinician examine any lumps, areas of concern, or changes seen on a mammogram or
felt during an examination.
Why is a Breast Ultrasound done?
You may be referred for a breast ultrasound to:
Check a lump or thickening in the breast
Assess breast pain or changes in the skin or nipple
Investigate findings from a mammogram or MRI
Look at breast implants and surrounding tissue
Monitor known benign (non-cancerous) breast conditions
How should I prepare?
No special preparation is needed. You can eat, drink, and take your normal medications. Wear a
comfortable top or two-piece outfit, as you will need to undress from the waist up.
What happens during the scan?
You will be asked to undress from the waist up and lie on an examination couch.
A small amount of gel is applied to your breast to help the ultrasound probe glide smoothly.
Sonographer moves the probe across the breast and underarm area to obtain images.
You may be asked to raise your arm or change position slightly.
The scan usually takes 10–20 minutes, depending on the area being examined.
Is it painful or harmful?
The procedure is not painful, though you may feel light pressure.
Breast ultrasound is very safe and uses no radiation — it is suitable for all ages, including during
pregnancy.
After the scan
You can get dressed and return to your normal activities straight away. The gel will be wiped off, but
a small amount may remain temporarily.
Are there any risks?
There are no known risks or side effects from breast ultrasound. Results
Your scan images will be reviewed and the results sent to your email, and if you wish to your referring
doctor.
Safety
Ultrasound is widely recognised as a very safe procedure. It uses high-frequency sound waves rather
than ionising radiation, so there is no X-ray exposure. Most patients do not experience any side
effects. Occasionally, you may feel mild pressure or temporary discomfort from the probe during the
examination, but this usually settles quickly.
