Bloodborne Pathogens
About This Service

What is the Bloodborne Pathogens?

These tests look for some of the most common sexually transmitted pathogens. The Anti-HCV blood test detects a specific antibody to the hepatitis C virus indicating an HCV infection has occurred now or in the past. Infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) can lead to chronic liver disease. The Anti-HIV+p24 Ag blood test is a combined test that screens for and diagnoses infection from the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) which is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). The p24 antigen test allows for early detection of infections. The Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HbsAg) bloodtest looks for the presence of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The HBsAg test can indicate an acute or a chronic infection from HBV. The Hepatitis B core antibody (HBc Ab total) blood test detects both IgM and IgG antibodies, and may be a marker of a recent hepatitis B infection. The Syphilis antibody total blood test is used  to screen for infection with  the bacterium that causes syphilis, Treponema pallidum. The infection remains detectable until adequate treatment is received. The Hepatitis A antibody (HAV Ab) test is a blood test that looks for specific antibodies produced in response to the virus that causes hepatitis A. These antibodies will be present in your blood if you have a current or past hepatitis A infection.

Understanding Your Report

Your results explained

Your report presents each marker clearly against established reference ranges — making it straightforward to understand where you stand and what, if anything, needs attention.

Low

Below Range

A result below the reference range means a marker is lower than expected. This can affect how you feel and may need dietary, supplementation, or clinical attention.

Next step: Review with a clinician to determine whether correction is needed.
Balanced

Within Range

Results within the expected range indicate this marker is functioning normally. A good baseline for any planned treatment or lifestyle programme.

Next step: Proceed with confidence, and retest periodically to track changes.
Elevated

Above Range

A result above the reference range may indicate physiological stress or an imbalance that deserves attention — even before any symptoms are present.

Next step: Clinician review is recommended before proceeding with any treatment.

Before Your Appointment

How to prepare

🕐

Sample Timing

Attend between 7am and 12pm where possible. Wait until any illness has fully resolved. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours beforehand, as this can affect certain markers.

💧

Fasting & Hydration

Fasting is not always required, but some tests may recommend it. If fasting is advised, avoid food for 8–12 hours and drink water only. Stay well hydrated for accurate sample collection.

💊

Medications & Supplements

Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise. Avoid vitamin, mineral, or biotin supplements for at least 24–48 hours before your test, as these can interfere with results.

🌸

Hormones & Menstrual Cycle

For hormone-related tests, timing within your menstrual cycle may be important. Follow the specific guidance provided in your booking confirmation email.
