TORCH

The TORCH profile is a comprehensive blood test designed to screen for infections that can impact pregnant women and their unborn babies. This profile tests for the presence of antibodies against a range of pathogens known to cause congenital infections, providing crucial information for prenatal care and management. What is the TORCH profile? The TORCH profile includes tests for the following infections: Toxoplasma gondii IgG and IgM: Detects antibodies related to toxoplasmosis, a parasitic infection that can be transmitted from mother to baby during pregnancy. Rubella virus IgG and IgM: Identifies antibodies for rubella, a viral infection that can cause serious birth defects if contracted during pregnancy. Cytomegalovirus IgG and IgM (CMV): Assesses exposure to cytomegalovirus, a common virus that can lead to congenital infections and complications in newborns. Herpes simplex virus 1 IgG and 2 IgG (HSV-1 and HSV-2): Detects antibodies to herpes simplex viruses, which can be transmitted during childbirth and affect the baby. Indications for testing This profile is particularly important for: Pregnant women: To check for active or past infections that may affect the pregnancy or the baby’s health. Women planning pregnancy: To identify any past infections that could pose risks during pregnancy. Individuals with symptoms: Such as fever, rash, or swollen lymph nodes, especially if there is a risk of congenital infection. Routine prenatal screening: To ensure a healthy pregnancy by identifying any potential risks early. What can be detected? The TORCH profile helps in: Identifying past and current infections: By detecting specific antibodies, it determines whether you have been exposed to or currently have these infections. Assessing immune status: Provides information about your immune response to these infections, which is crucial for managing and preventing potential complications. Fasting requirements Fasting is not required for the TORCH profile. Key benefits The TORCH profile offers a comprehensive assessment of infections that can impact maternal and fetal health. By identifying these infections, healthcare providers can offer appropriate management and treatment options to safeguard both the mother and the baby. This proactive approach helps in minimizing risks and ensuring a healthy pregnancy.

No, there is no need for a doctor’s request to book. However, it’s recommended to discuss your symptoms with your GP.
No lab test is 100% accurate. However, medical testing that takes place in certified laboratories in the U.S. is performed by trained professionals and follows rigorous quality assurance standards with extensive oversight. You can trust the data generated by today’s exacting medical tests. However, test results are most reliable when used in conjunction with other meaningful information, such as your medical and family histories and a physical exam. Additionally, there should be open communication between you and your doctor or other members of your health care team.
Turnaround time for most of the tests is up to 24 hours, however the tests such as genetic, virology, STI’s… will take from 5 days to 2 weeks
Typically, a blood sample is taken by inserting a needle into a vein, usually in your arm. Before your blood is drawn, an elastic band is tied around your upper arm to increase blood in the veins, and the puncture location is wiped clean with an antiseptic. A blood draw using a needle may cause a temporary sting. The blood draw normally lasts for less than a minute.
