What is an Abdominal Ultrasound?
An abdominal ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to
create images of the organs in your abdomen. It is commonly used to examine the liver, gallbladder,
pancreas, aorta, spleen, and kidneys. This type of scan can help diagnose a variety of conditions,
including abdominal pain, bloating, and digestive symptoms. It is safe, painless, and does not use
any radiation.
Preparation for the Scan
Please do not eat for six hours before your appointment. You may drink clear fluids such as water,
black tea, or black coffee, but fizzy drinks should be avoided. Milk, milk substitutes, and juice can
introduce gas and make the scan more difficult, so these should be avoided as well. Wear loose-
fitting clothing to allow easy access to your abdomen. Continue taking your prescribed medications
as usual unless your doctor advises otherwise. You may wish to bring a snack to have after your scan.
During the Scan
You will lie on a couch while the scan is performed. A small amount of ultrasound gel will be applied
to your abdomen, and the sonographer will move a handheld device called a transducer over your
skin to capture images. The procedure typically takes between 15 and 25 minutes.
After the Scan
You can return to your usual daily activities immediately, as no recovery time is needed after the
ultrasound. Please continue to follow any medical advice or activity restrictions previously given by
your healthcare professional.
Results
Your scan images will be reviewed, and the results will be sent to your email and, if you wish, to your
referring doctor.
Ultrasound is widely recognised as a very safe procedure. It uses high-frequency sound waves rather
than ionising radiation, so there is no X-ray exposure. Most patients do not experience any side
effects. Occasionally, you may feel mild pressure or temporary discomfort from the probe during the
examination, but this usually settles quickly.
